The dark matter piece was added to be able to craft a Dark Matter block. It is somewhat hard to get, it's mostly just time consuming to get even one. The texture is actually a corner of the dark matter block.

Matter Condenser[edit | edit source]
This process takes 30 real time minutes to get one piece. And it has to be a full 64 stack of obsidian for it to "compress".
